2022.01.24 06:49 littleaesop What's it like to be physically attractive and intelligent?
2022.01.24 06:49 IdiotsLantern Sorry, I need to complain more about the Custodes because I'm going insane
This thread is probably a bad idea, but I must get it out.
When (I vented my spleen about the Custodes last time[https://www.reddit.com/40kLore/comments/rryahy/the_custodes_are_creepy_and_they_scare_me/]), I really thought that would be it, it would all be out of my system and I could go back to despising them quietly from a distance as the creepy souless godless lobotomized bastards they are.
Then I saw (this video by Valrek)[https://www.reddit.com/40kLore/comments/rryahy/the_custodes_are_creepy_and_they_scare_me/] and damnit, I need to say one last thing. Ok, technically two last things, but they are related.
One of the points raised in my other thread was, I complain that the Custodes are incredibly capable while also being useless. They don't do anything, they just stand there for decades at a time, waiting for nothing to happen. They release deadly predators and assign assassins to infiltrate their own palace just so they have something to do while the human race crumbles outside of their door.
The counter-argument to this was that I don't know what they've been doing lately. Since Guilliman came back they've been doing stuff, like, uh... what Guilliman tells them to. Thanks.
But no, you say! Turns out the Custodes have been super important! Guided by fateseers (which are totally not a thing we just made up!) they've been protecting random children from the shadows for centuries and that's why every important Imperial got to grow up to do Important Imperial Stuff! This one protected young hiver Helbrect in secret!
So basically, if you think Helbrecht is cool, thank a Custodes because without that protection from the shadows there's no way this future badass would've survived his childhood to do all the badass stuff he ended up doing! So there!
And I'm like
Are you serious?
Can you conceive of a cheaper, lamer retcon?
This is transparent overcompensation for complaints about the Custodes inactivity, to make them retroactively responsible for every part of 40k lore you might like. That character you like? They watched over him as a kid. That Event you think was cool? Secretly the Custodes made sure everyone important would be there. The Custodes are responsible for all of the cool stuff you like that exists! Really!
Oh, and they're supposedly spies as well. Because when I think effective spies, I think of nine foot tall demihumans who cannot possibly blend in with any crowd anywhere.
Does this sound a little... childish? To anyone else? Like the sort of thing a 12-year-old fanfic writer would write about their self-insert, as a way of making them the most important, shiniest and best part of the setting. All of the coolest, most important characters really owe their success to OC. Those important plot events only went that way because OC was there to make sure things happened like they're supposed to.
And I hate that, because it flattens the whole setting. Dynamic, pro-active characters are robbed of their agency. Seeming close calls and near misses it turns out were under control the entire time. And above all, greatness is Predetermined. Helbrecht was never an ordinary hive brat who made good, he was marked, he was special, he was Destined for Greatness and it was known at the highest reaches of the Imperium.
And that's... just... awful. For so many reasons. For one, the idea that these fateseers (whoever they are) can pinpoint which ten-year-old amoung trillians is going to grow up to do Important Stuff, and that child can then be positively identified and located in the morass of the Imperial inferstructure, doesn't really follow with the way precognition has been shown working the other times we've seen it. Visions of the future seem to be very abstract and subjective, and even Primarchs often struggle to make sense of what they've seen. So the idea there's a whole office of future-seer people who find Baby Heroes and dispatch nine-foot-tall bodyguards in shining golden armor to keep an eye on them, and these bodyguards are never noticed by anyone even in densely populated hive cities or muddy battlefields, and they never end up guarding the wrong person or interacting with the Special Destined One in such a way as to set them on a different path ....
... Oh and they're spies as well. To illustrate my thoughts on this, I have constructed the following dialog.
A. Presume the Custodes have a vast and impeccable spy network. B: Ok. How? A. How what? B: How does that work? A: It's a spy network. It gathers information, secretly, and takes it to Terra. B: Yeah but how? A: Can't tell you, it's a secret. B: Because I can't imagine there's such a thing as an "undercover custodes." The genesteeler cult or chaos cell you're trying to infiltrate is definitely going to notice something is up with the new guy. A: They probably hire humans for undercover work B: Ok. Where do they find those humans? Craigslist? A: Of course not, they're highly trained specialists! B: Trained by who? The custodes? A: Sure, why not? B: Ok, now we're assuming the Custodes run some sort of spy extension program where they train up perfect spies. Ok. Now they need to equip them with paper records and cover stories. A: Custodes can do that. They're really good at everything, even paperwork. B: Ok, now how do you get them into the field? A: They have ships! B: Shiny golden ships, I think someone's going to noti- A: No, they'll have special sneaky ships for those jobs! No one will see them! B: Ok. So their spy lands on a planet. Do they take their team with them or do they start building a network once they're there? A: Probably whichever is more practical given the situation. They're very well trained. B: So how do they get the information back to Terra? A: Uh... by astropath? B: Those can be evesdropped on. A: Paper letters delivered by currier B: Where did the curriers come from? A: They have their own secret 5G network. Seriously, it's like the network thing. They probably use whatever they have to. B: Ok. I'm accepting they have a network, nobody knows about it, they move their spies on and off planet, their communication infrastructure is swift and impenetrable and the whole operation operates with so much flawless secrecy that they've never been compromised ever. A: You don't need to be so snotty about it. B: I just have one more question. A: Ok B: How is this a CUSTODES network? It sounds like a human network. Humans are doing all the work, humans are taking all the risks. CUstodes just sign the paychecks, and maybe provide the gear and the training. But they can't go out in the field for obvious reasons. A: They can still run logistics and analysis. That's important. Maybe that's how they find the Important Kids, as well as keeping an eye on coups and rebellions and stuff. B: And do... oh. Oh no. A: ... What is it? B: We've come full circle. A: How? B: Because my next question was going to be, "And they DO WHAT with this information?" A: Ugh, not this again. B: Yes this again. A: They do stuff. B: What sort of stuff? A: Secret stuff. They protect the Imperium from the shadows. Stopping secret coups and secretly protecting people. It's very secret. B: Yeah because when I think of guardians from the shadows I think of giants in shiny gold armor. A: They do important stuff. It's just secret. B: Sure. A: We just don't get to know about it. Because it's a secret. B: Ok. A: B: A: ... have you painted those new Gray Knight Terminators yet? B: Nooo I haven't even unwrapped them A: the shame. B: I am ashamed. A: Lets go dick around on reddit. B: Yes, everyone must know my thoughts on the Custodes! A: Literally nobody needs to know your thoughts on the Custodes. B: I still don't like them! A: I'll alert the media.
A: Have you been livestreaming this? B: Oh sh-

2022.01.24 06:49 FuckingPope Was Meat Loaf a regular panelist on a music-based quiz show on UK TV (late 90s), or did I imagine that?
I am sure I have a memory of Meat Loaf as a regular panelist (similar to Lee Mack on Would I Lie To You) on a music-based quiz show around late 90s/early 2000s.
I am not thinking of Buzzcocks. For some reason, I think it was on Channel 5, but that's probably wrong. Pretty sure it was short lived, and was funny, but not as edgy as Buzzcocks (may have aired pre-9pm).
Does this exist? I've tried researching but can't find evidence it exists...
